Meihuazhou is a national 4A scenic area in Fengqiao, Jiaxing — about 1.5 hours from Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou — a 1,500-year-old water town whose land is split by waterways into five petal-like pieces, hence the name “Plum Blossom Isle.” November is ginkgo season here: the area’s two millennium-old ginkgo trees, both over 29 metres tall and standing across the river from each other for 1,250 years, turn gold, and locals call them the “love trees” joined by the Milky Way. Staying guests sleep inside the scenic area itself, in either Zitaoxuan (a Jiangnan water-town style inn) or Shuixicaotang (a Zen-themed inn built around the 24 solar terms), and can come and go from the scenic area as often as they like with their room card.
